About Carlo Genetics

Carlo Genetics was founded by Lorne and Carol Penner in 1987, and was the first licensed Boar Stud for Manitoba, and the fourth one in Canada. It started with just 2 imported boars housed in an insulated freight trailer with penning, slats, pit liner, wiring and plumbing installed. From there it expanded out to a rented barn, and as business grew, another barn was rented, with the semen being couriered from the barns to a small lab at the home place.

In 1993, business partners bought in shares, the business was incorporated, and a new barn was built that would house 40 boars. George Goossen was one of the business partners, and he took over the barn and boar entry side while Lorne has the oversight of the lab. This barn was quickly outgrown, and an addition was made, as well as renovations, that would house up to 200 boars. In 1997 a second site was established in an outlying area to meet the demand for sales, as well as offer semen from PRRS and Myco negative animals for those that requested it. With two sites it was felt the company, as well as the client, would not be as vulnerable should a disaster strike. The second site was built to house 300 boars. In 2003 an addition was made at the original site that brought the boar capacity up to 300 as well, giving a combined total of 600 boar spaces.

When Carlo Genetics was founded in 1987, Manitoba was at less than 2 % on A.I. matings. It is now estimated to be at more than 85%.

Throughout the years other improvements were made, warehouses built at each site, as well as quarantine barns.

In 2003 a computer assisted sperm analysis device was set up at each site to more accurately manage sperm quality and quantity.

Through the years Carlo Genetics Inc. has put product quality and customer service as its number one priority and this striving for excellence is still the selling feature to discerning clients.
